In order to install an SSL certificate in Microsoft IIS 8 and 8.5, you need to have generated a CSR and requested an SSL certificate. Please read the manual Generate a CSR in Microsoft IIS 8 and 8.5 for more information.
The SSL certificate will be sent to you by email after the request has been processed, but can also be downloaded through your account on the Networking4all website.
The installation of an SSL certificate in Microsoft IIS 8 and 8.5 is done directly on the Windows Server.
Save your certificate on the server with the name ‘domainname.csr’, replacing ‘domainname’ with the domain name for which the certificate was issued.
Search for the application ‘Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager’ in your start menu and open the application. Select the server name from the Connections menu on the left side of the window. Open the option ‘Server Certificates’ from the list of icons in the middle of the window.
Select the option ‘Complete Certificate Request…’ from the Actions menu on the right side of the window. This opens the wizard ‘Complete Certificate Request’.
Select the certificate you just saved on the server. Enter a name for your certificate in the field ‘friendly name’. This name is not part of the actual certificate and serves for identification purposes. It is therefore advisable to use the domain name for which the certificate was requested.
Select ‘Personal’ in the dropdown menu under ‘Select a certificate store for the new certificate’. Click ‘OK’. The certificate has now been installed on the server, but has to be assigned to a domain. For this, select the server name from the Connections menu on the left side of the window. Select the website you wish to assign the certificate to. Click on ‘Bindings…’ in the Actions menu on the right side of the window.
The window ‘Site Bindings’ will be opened. Click ‘Add…’. In the window ‘Add Site Binding’, enter ‘HTTPS’ as the type. For ‘IP Address, you can either select the IP address of your website, or leave the option set to ‘All Unassigned’. The TCP Port must remain set to 443. At the bottom of the window, select the correct certificate from the dropdown menu. Click ‘OK’.
Your certificate has been installed successfully.
